Season 2002/2003
This season saw the club finish at the top of the Premier League table, after their lowest finish in the history of the Premier League the previous season, when they came third. In order to win the title, the team had to pull Arsenal back from an eight-point lead at the beginning of March. An unleashed Ruud van Nistelrooy had a big stake in this championship, scoring 30 goals for them that season.
United also finished as runners-up in the League Cup, with Liverpool eventually taking the prize. United also broke the English transfer record. For the third time in just over a year as they paid £29.1 million for Leeds United defender Rio Ferdinand.
At the end of the season, United midfielder David Beckham moved to Real Madrid in a £25 million deal. Meanwhile, 37-year-old centre-back Laurent Blanc announced his retirement from playing. Fellow centre-back David May was given a free transfer after nine years at the club, the last five of which had seen his first team opportunities limited to a handful of appearances.
Season 2003/2004
United started the season by winning the 2003 FA Community Shield and then secured a record eleventh FA Cup with a 3–0 win over Millwall. However, the club surrendered the Premier League title to unbeaten champions Arsenal, with a second-half dip in league form. Some say it’s because Rio Ferdinand started an eight-month ban from football. He missed drugs test and restricting United to a third-place finish.
New to the United side were Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazilian 2002 FIFA World Cup-winning midfielder Kléberson, American goalkeeper Tim Howard, Cameroonian midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba and French striker David Bellion.
United’s UEFA Champions League and League Cup dreams ended in the last 16. With the European exit being particularly painful as a last minute goal by eventual champions Porto. Mourinho’s side put them out of the competition and denied them an eighth successive Champions League quarter-final.
