AS Roma Home 1991/1992
Roma did not repeat its Coppa Italia victory from the previous season, but retained its status as the top team from the Capital with fifth in the league standings. Roma’s main struggle was its inability to seal matches by a close margin, drawing on 14 occasions, and it neither had a watertight defence, nor a fearsome attack. Despite those shortcomings, Roma was only three points behind Torino for third.
After this season Roma decided it was time to change the squad around. They sold star striker Rudi Völler to Marseille. He had been there since 1987 and scored a 45 goals. A little disappointed because at Werder Bremen he was so much more prolific. Roma replaced him with Claudio Caniggia and in season 92/93 Francesco Totti made his debut.
Caniggia moved to Roma in 1992, a move both parties believed would help the club aim for the Scudetto. Though Roma lost it’s momentum mid-season with only 15 points from 17 games. After a 1–1 draw against Napoli on 21 March 1993, following a surprise doping test. Caniggia was handed a 13-month ban for taking cocaine. He has a history of enjoying the high life.
Despite all their woes on the field, Roma wore an amazing Adidas home kit. Their first year with Adidas after NR left as a sponsor. The logo was moved to the sleeve which was custom for Italian teams in the 90’s.
