Real Madrid Away 1999/2000

John Toshack was sacked by Real Madrid in November 1999 as a consequence of league’s bad form. Following a 3–2 defeat against Rayo Vallecano that left them in eighth position. Madrid re-hired Vicente del Bosque who previously managed the club in 1994 and 1996.

This season marked the start of the del Bosque era of trophy winning at the club, having taken over from Toshack early in the campaign. The squad was also largely different from the previous squad, with the arrival of Steve McManaman (Liverpool) and Nicolas Anelka (Arsenal) from the English Premier League respectively, as well as local talents Míchel Salgado, and Iván Helguera, to support the budding young talent of Raúl, Iker Casillas, Fernando Morientes and Guti, as well as veterans such as Fernando Hierro and Roberto Carlos.

Champions League Final 99/00

Madrid and Valencia contested the first ever all-Spanish final in European Cup history. Paris was the city to play host to the encounter. The Madristas having lifted the trophy in the French capital on two previous occasions, new the stadium very well. In the very first edition, when they beat Stade de Reims and then in 1981 when Liverpool were the beaten finalists.

En route to the claiming their place in this final, the madridistas came up against Porto, Olympiacos and Molde in the first group stage and Bayern Munich, Dynamo Kiev and Rosenborg in the second.

During the knock-out stages, the quarter-final clash at Old Trafford against Manchester United is the one that stands out. In an excellent team performance, Fernando Redondo conjured up one of the most well-recognised moments in Real Madrid’s history when he got past his man with a back-heel before teeing up Raúl. In the semi-final, Nicolas Anelka was the key man, netting in both legs as the Whites saw off Bayern Munich. They fought off all odds because in the second group stage they lost two times against the Germans, who were an outstanding force in those days. Playing with the likes of Effenberg, Elber and Oliver Kahn.

Stade de France final
In the showdown, a Fernando Morientes header put Real Madrid into the ascendancy before half-time, this was followed by an acrobatic goal from Steve McManaman and a Raúl solo from the half way line. The win made sure Real Madrid lifted their 8th Champions League.
