Real Madrid Home 1998/1999
Madrid was a weird place back in the day. They sacked Jupp Heynckes shortly after winning the Champions League in May and hired former Valencia coach Guus Hiddink. Having come fourth in the league and achieving continental success last season, Real Madrid was considered a favorite for the 1998–99 season. The season actually turned out to be a disaster.
In the Uefa Super Cup they had a huge favorite role against Zola’s Chelsea. But against all odds, Chelsea beat them 0-1 by a goal from Gustavo Poyet. Eventually manager Hiddink was sacked in February due to criticizing several players. Welshman John Tosack took over but unfortunately the results got even worse. Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing Copa del Rey semi-finals exit after a 2–7 aggregate loss to eventual cup winners Valencia, as well as the Champions League quarter-finals exit against Ukrainian powerhouse Dynamo Kyiv, only winning the Intercontinental Cup that season.
Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez did have a good season, become topscorer in La Liga with 25 goals. The squad was filled with great stars like Roberto Carlos, Clarence Seedorf, Fernando Morientes and Redondo.
